Safety

Pipelines are the safest way to deliver the energy we need. 99.999% of products delivered by pipelines reach their destination safely. That said, pipeline operators are constantly working to keep their pipelines safe through proactive inspections, preventive maintenance, and 24/7 pipeline monitoring.

Ready to respond

Pipeline releases are extremely rare.  If one occurs, pipeline operators work together with local first responders, government agency representatives, and cleanup contractors to respond as quickly as possible, perform any cleanups, and then investigate what happened.

All pipeline operators are required to have detailed emergency response plans describing how they will respond to any emergency. These plans can be quickly activated to deploy containment equipment such as movable barriers and booms to limit the spread of a spill, followed by equipment such as vacuum trucks and steam cleaners to clean up the spill. Federal and State On-Scene Coordinators, such as from the U.S. Coast Guard or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, assist with response efforts.

Environmental Protection

Pipeline operators minimize the environmental impact of their pipelines with route selection, construction and materials, proactive inspections, and preventative maintenance, 24/7 leak detection systems, and emergency response programs.
